Lacerations, or cuts, can be sustained to almost any area of the body. They may occur in cosmetically sensitive areas or involve underlying structures such as tendons, nerves and arteries. Some lacerations may require the expertise of a specialist plastic surgeon. Meticulous cleaning and repair with attention to potential underlying structural damage will minimise functional and aesthetic problems and maximise recovery.

Nerves are the “electrical wires” that carry messages from the brain to the rest of the body. They allow us to feel touch, pressure, temperature and to move muscles. Damage to nerves can affect all of these functions. Commonly injured nerves include those of the fingers, wrist, arms, legs and face. The repair of a nerve injury requires an operation using magnification. Very fine sutures (stitches) are used to repair the damaged nerve, with the aim of restoring function.

Arteries and veins carry blood throughout the body. Injuries to arteries and veins may need to be repaired to maintain blood supply to the affected area. This is achieved in the operating theatre, under magnification with very fine stitches used to repair the damaged blood vessel. Vessels in the fingers and wrist are commonly injured when the hand is lacerated.

Lacerations to the hand and fingers often result in tendon injuries. Careful repair in the operating theatre followed by specialist hand therapy will ensure that the best outcome can be achieved. Most people who experience a tendon injury seek medical advice soon after they occur. However, late presentations of tendon injuries may also occur, and in these instances can often still be successfully managed.

Hand fractures are very common. They can be the result of falls, work accidents or playing sport. Management, both surgical and non-surgical, will be discussed at your consultation. Surgery often involves insertion of metal plates and screws or pins to hold the fracture in position as it heals. Following hand surgery, hand therapy is frequently recommended. This can assist you to achieve optimal results, and maximize your recovery.
